Jewish Community Mental Health Education Project
Highlights of Project Activities
Major highlights of the activities we have carried
out over the past two years include the following:
- Establishment of a broad Jewish communal coalition to work on mental
health issues collaboratively. This now includes 36 Jewish organizations,
synagogues, and schools. Approximately 80 Jewish community members
have served as committee members, volunteers, and/or speakers.
- Providing training and support for Jewish communal professionals
to give them the knowledge to better address mental health issues;
two dedicated trainings have been held and a third training is planned
for December 11, 2006. Breakout sessions of interest to staff were
included in the March 26 conference.
- Holding a major community conference to increase awareness and decrease
stigma in the Jewish community at large. Approximately 450 people
attended Let There Be Light: A Jewish Community Conference on
Mental Health and Healing on March 26 at Beth El Ner Tamid.
- Development and distribution of a Mental Health Resources Guide
for the Greater Milwaukee Jewish Community. Over 2500 copies of our
Mental Health Resources Guide for the Greater Milwaukee Jewish
Community have been distributed and it is now available online
on the JFS web site.
- Supporting congregations, schools, and organizations in their efforts
to address mental health concerns. This has included providing speakers,
resource materials, and consultation services by JFS.
- Three community discussion sessions with the theme of "Creating
a Caring Community: A Jewish Community Conversation" were held in
May 2006. Approximately 60 community members participated to discuss
community needs and provide guidance for future programming and support.
Further input came from program evaluations and interviews with rabbis,
Jewish communal professionals, consumers, and family members.
