Dr. Jackson Katz, One of America's Anti-Sexist Male Activists, Will Bring His Anti-Violence Message To Milwaukee

02/19/2013

MILWAUKEE, WI – Jewish Family Services announced that Jackson Katz, Ph.D., educator, author and acclaimed lecturer, will speak at the Italian Conference Center in Milwaukee on Wednesday, May 1, 2013. A continental breakfast and registration will begin at 8:00am, followed by Katz’ multimedia presentation, “Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity,” from 8:30-11:30am. Katz will be available for a book signing immediately after the program. The event is free and open to the public.

In his presentation, Katz will use clips from his film, “Tough Guise,” to illustrate how mainstream media images from sports, television, Hollywood film, and music videos help to promote violent masculinity as a cultural norm. The intent of this lecture is to provide attendees with conceptual and practical tools for reading media images critically...especially images connected with masculinity and violence.

Katz is a pioneer in the fields of gender violence prevention education and critical media literacy. He is cofounder of Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), one of the original “bystander” programs and the most widely utilized sexual and domestic violence prevention initiative in college and professional athletics in North America. Katz is the creator of the film “Tough Guise” and author of “The Macho Paradox” and “Leading Men: Presidential Campaigns and the Politics of Manhood.”

In addition, Katz has appeared on numerous national and local radio programs in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, as well as television programs such as “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Good Morning America,” “ABC News 20/20,” and the “CBS Evening News.”
